trail to the walnut street bridge when a man slashed her in the forehead just like that. no warning, no conscience. it is thursday night and the big story on "action news" tonight is the search for an attacker. after an assault that once again brings into question the safety of the schuylkill river trail. "action news" reporter christie ileto is live at the scene of the attack. and christie, you've got the full story. >> that's right, jim. police say that she and another person were walking up these steps when they realized that they were being followed. moments later, the 24-year-old woman had a 3-inch gash on her face. >> at 3:00 this afternoon there was a -- >> it is all people are talking about on the schuylkill river trail. detectives say a 24-year-old woman attacked in broad daylight today. >> today? >> yeah, at 3:00. >> oh, my gosh. >>the victim and her friend were climbing these steps that led to walnut street when the suspect wearing a dark hoodie began to follow. and he reportedly shouted "you

don't know anything" and slashed her forehead with an object. >> and a day like this you have runners and bikers and passerbyes up top. and you wouldn't think that anybody would be harmed. >> a lot of people out here. wow that's correct is scary. >> a rash of attacked early w -- earliyer this year put a spotlight on it. and they say this is a painful reminder to step up efforts to make the trail safe. and volunteers as part of a new trail watch, they will be patrolling a lot sooner. >> we just think we should use the resources that we have and go out on the trail and have another layer. >> the trail has newly-placed markers and lighting and later cameras. and for now, extra eyes on the trail to make sure this attack isn't repeated. the victim was taken to the hospital and is stable. now the suspect is described as

being in his 20s with a beard and having a dark hoodie. anyone with information is asked to contact detectives. reporting live, christie ileto for channel 6 "action news." >> thank you. a septa bus struck two women in chestnut hill this afternoon. the accident happened at 4:30 at the intersection of germantown and gravers lane. and a woman suffered head injuries and at einstein medical center. and a 50 woman treated for hand and knee injuries. police in south florida say a philadelphia woman admitted to killing her two small children yesterday. sophia hines allegedly suffocated her 7-month-old son, st. leo and 3-year-old daughter ariel yesterday at a relative's home. and we spoke to hines' husband in the frankford seconds of philadelphia, and anthony singleton is the father of the boy. >> really good with the kids. this was the last person i would think would do something to our

son. to our daughter. >> police say hines called a relative to come home after the incident. that relative saw the children's lifeless bodies and called police. investigators had not said why hines allegedly killed the children. police charged anthony gilbert of upper chichester in connections with a shooting on i-95 on tuesday. police say a 38-year-old victim was traveling north near the girard point bridge in philadelphia when gilbert came up fast behind him. after an exchange, gilbert fired a hand gun, allegedly hitting the rear wheel of the victim's car. arrested in south philadelphia this morning, he has been charged with aggravated assault and criminal mischief. on the campaign front, things are moving quickly on the democratic side. president barack obama endorsed hillary clinton for president. >> i know how hard this job can be. that's why i know hillary will

be so good at it. in fact, i don't think there hats ever been someone so qualified to hold this office. >> the endorsement launches president obama's effort to bring the democratic party together after a tough primary campaign. he hosted senator bernie sanders at the white house today where the two men talked for an hour and a half. e emerging from the white house, sanders will compete in the washington, d.c. primary and pursue issues at the democratic convention in philadelphia. and he also pledged to meet with the presumptive nominee hillary clinton and work with her to prevent donald trump from becoming president. in new york, trump met with potential donors today. and the fundraising off to a start, but they won't have to raise as much money as some people think. some people think it will have to be $1 billion. trump says he will raise enough money to win. new jersey governor chris

the ridley township police on the lookout for a thief who stole from three vehicles early this morning. lisa parks says her car got hit. she is a professional deejay and says all of her equipment was taken. >> i would legally like my stuff back. i don't want to press charges. if you are out there have&have my stuff. >> and she said the thief also stole money she was collecting for a 5-year-old burn victim. and the cars targeted were unlocked and hers because because the lock was broken. and because of enrollment, the direct wants to redraw the bou pound -- boundaries.

letter describing the attack. contrary to turner's claim he had never used drugs or alcohol before college, a sentencing report obtained by abc news contains texts and photos from his phone showing that he indeed had. 23-year-old devonte sanford from detroit getting his first taste of freedom. nine years in prison nor crimes he didn't commit. just 14 when he confessed to killing four people in detroit it turns out that confession was forced after another man admitted to pulling the trigger. sanford said he is not resentful. >> that's all i really wanted is my freedom. so i am trying to move forward and put it behind me. >> sanford looking forward to learning how to drive and spending time with his family. a muslim prayer service today in louisville, kentucky the start of two days of memorials to honor the life of muhammad ali. ali insisted that he wanted the

traditional ceremony to the open to all. and about 4,000 -- maybe it 14,000 people attended today. a funeral profession will wind through louisville tomorrow before a 2:00 p.m. memorial service. he died last friday night at the age of 74. tonight on "healthcheck," a researcher at the university of pittsburgh has contracted the zi zika virus, not from a mosquito but from an accident in the library. she accidentally stuck herself with a needle during an experiment last month. and she developed symptoms but has recovered and is back to work. and the researcher was advised to wear long sleeves and insect repellent for weeks to make sure the mosquitos don't bite her and get the virus. and the reso soounion of

recipients. the first area hospital to perform a liver transplant and today arising number of operations done with living don'tors. a collections process by the philadelphia gas works declared unconstitutional by a federal judge after one customer got fed up and sued. and the landlords and the public utilities in 2013, the latest on her investigation. >> the philadelphia landlord introduce d -- interviewed thre years ago, says they placed leans on his property. and the judge ruled in his favor stopping the collection process in his tracks. >> i am outraged.

who and leans placed on his properties by the philadelphia gas works. the utilities fails to collect, and one case from a tenant who left his property eight years before. >> i wanted to do something that would not only help myself, but help lots of other people. >> so wolf sued. these piles of records are lists of other landlords also facing leans for bills their tenants allegedly owe like marvin black. >> some of the gas bills in the neighborhood of 16 years old. >> like wolf, he says he never used the gas or signed a contract and says he doesn't owe pgw a penny. >> who do you think they should be going after? >> of course the tenant and should have done it in a timely planner. >> and he argues they should be turning off the tenant's gas

when they become delinquent and let the landlords instead of leading them build some cases in the tens of thousands of dollars overdue. >> i told them i believed this was unconstitutional and now i know that i am right because the court said so. >> the representative has been fighting pgw's collection process calling it flawed and a federal judge agreed. and they say it violates due process and pgw is appealing it. and telling "action news" they currently suspended placing leans on the property of the landlords upon resolution of the case. allowing the gas works to lean the landlord without notice, and they hope to change that. >> justice requires the right thing be done. if the law is repealed, they get nothing. of course that's what i want. >> what hearing will reserve any issues with the summary judgment and determine if leans on other

working in creative services a fantastic photographer. and look at the waxing crescent move rising over the center city skyline, just gorgeous. we have clear skies. and get shots like that on a night like tonight. a little on the cool side, philadelphia 67 down from the high of 77. the second day in a row with temperatures only in the 70s. 81 the normal high this time of year. allentown 61. millville the same. trenton 62. cape may 69 and wilmington currently 62 degrees. satellite 6 along with action radar showing we have a few things going on. low pressure that is spinning over quebec that is moving away. but there is high pressure building in from the tennessee valley. so the difference in the pressure gradient, that's what created the wind tunnel effect with the winds out of the west-northwest today. high pressure moving over us tonight. that's allowing the winds to relax. and no trap in the eat of the earth, so the overnight low for philadelphia, 56 degrees.

the northwest suburbs dropping down into the 40s. a taste of fall overnight. and then temperatures recover to about 78 degrees tomorrow with the double barrel high pressure over us. picture-perfect friday. loads of sunshine, a little breezy but we're talking about winds up to about 14 miles per hour. not more than 30 miles per hour like today. now heading into saturday, there's a warm front moving through. the latest futuretracker model shows that this could squeeze out a few showers or a thunderstorm, mainly north and west of philadelphia in the morning hours. then we get that warm, humid air. and a piece of energy, kind of like the system that came through yesterday, will be rolling through around 5:00. and this could bring us a broken line of some thunderstorms. and the severe storm prediction center but most of the viewing area, except the counties along the coast, under the slight risk of severe weather. any has potential for damaging wind, hail, and even a tornado.

and we will have to see if they live up to the potential and more information on "action news" tomorrow. and down the shore tomorrow, beautiful and sunshine, 74. and saturday mixture of clouds and sunshine, 76. and night tight storms -- nighttime storms are possible. and if you are heading to the mountains sunshine and 70. saturday, 75 and strong storms. early to midafternoon in the poconos. and sundayy windy and bright sunshine and high of 73. with the exclusive accuweather seven-day forecast, beautiful tomorrow. sunny and pleasant not much better than this in june. and saturday the summertime warmth and 84 degrees. and chance for late-day storms that can be strong to severe. and then warmer and 89 degrees and a cold front drops the temperatures into the upper 70s on monday with a little bit of a wind. tuesday mixture of clouds and sunshine and high of 80.
